This is your home, the last bastion of what remains of yourself. You and the land are tied, now, in ways you had never considered before. Here you first you came, the land as just a means to an end. Then, it grew on you. It became a home, and one you tended with care. A flashbang shock later, and it is family. A better family than you've ever known, and you track its shrinking like the tick marks of a child's height on the wall. And oh does it keep shrinking. You grow bitter, angry. Even in death you are hounded and disrespected. You, of all people! You know it's futile, there's nothing you can do, but still here you stay, trying your hardest to save your prairie.

About Irene
She is a woman of two conflicting constants: unwavering confidence in her skill and knowledge, and the crush of imposter syndrome that keeps her quiet and to herself.
In life she was a rodeo star, known from all over the west for her brutal skill on the back of a bull, or the finesse of training a wild-caught mustang. This is her claim to fame, but under a name she did not choose. In life she was deeply closeted as a woman. It was both a liberating feeling, knowing yourself, but also a truth borne in secret. She wouldn't have it any other way. This way, she could keep the Irene she loved away from those that might ridicule her. It's hard to explain yourself sometimes.

Relationships + Depictions
Irene isn't close to most other esk, and the people she knew in life are all back in Colorado, and likely dead by now. Lupe is the exception.
In life, Lupe was confidant to Irene's innermost parts of herself, her lover, and her best friend. They spent a few years together in the deserts of west Texas, but parted when Irene left to make a life for herself in Wisconsin.Irene was transformed by Isi. She doesn't know what to think about her just yet, but can respect someone who does not make decisions lightly. You are free to draw Irene as an esk, but please ask before you write about her or draw her human self.

Boundary
Cold prairie is now scarce on the Great Plains. Once covering swaths upon swaths of the northern edge of the plains, it's now reduced to small fragments along roadsides, the edges of fields, or in sectioned-off parks. She is specifically holed up in southern Wisconsin, in the remnants of a tallgrass prairie. She ranched here at one point, so the prairie is rough around the edges, but she loves it so.

Nature Feature
Prairie brome (Bromus kalmii) is an adaptable grass, able to thrive in wet or dry soils, in willow thickets, along roadsides, or out in the open. Irene is much the same, and embodies a "stick to your guns" mentality. Prairie brome, confident in her place in the world but inconspicuous, also foils the famous Irene.

You are yourself only in relation to others. You are a parent of two, an estranged ex, friend of someone more important than you, and middle child. But who are you to yourself? Confused, angry, sad, those are emotions. Kalispell is not you, it is a place, but it's as close as you can get, and as much as you may ever know. Maybe if you keep this in mind, it will lead you to answers. Or maybe you'll always be relevant only in your connection to others.

About Kalispell
If things were different, they'd go by Robin, but for now they hold onto what memories they have. Kalispell is the name of the town where they built their life (and watched it be torn down).
They miss Montana, and feel trapped in cold Alaska, where the sun sets so early in winter, and rises forever in summer. It's a beautiful land, but empty of familiarity to Kalispell. They don't remember themself very well, and even in life prioritized other people over themself. Goals they had were never spoken and never met, and demanding partners could always get the better end of the stick.

Relationships + Depictions
Kalispell's relationship to Sam is complicated. On the one hand, he was the man they loved in life (though never able to act on this feeling), and a best friend since childhood. On the other, he dragged them kicking and screaming into a different life, so removed from their children and everything they love. It's a confusing dichotomy, amid even more confusion.
If you'd like to draw Kalispell, feel free to! They aren't the most sociable, however, and don't often visit the conservatory. Once in a blue moon would they mingle.

Boundary
Kalispell keeps home in the boreal forests of central Alaska. Its hills are blanketed in spruce, creating a dense crosshatching of branches. Though summer brings endless sun, in the understory, it remains dark and sheltered.
Kalispell is able to retreat here, a den of their own making. It's not warm, and it hosts no familial ties, but it's what they have.

Nature Feature
Kalispell has two. Dendrolycopodium dendroideum, or prickly tree clubmoss, is a cold-loving lycophyte, native to much of northern North America and parts of Russia. It's hardy, and also occurs in Montana.
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a cosmopolitan plant, found all across the northern hemisphere. It grows in a wide variety of conditions. It has also been used in folk medicines since time immemorial. Maybe Kalispell could learn a thing or two from yarrow.

The clubmoss looks like a small pine sapling, but its long scaled fruiting body betrays it.
A cluster of white flowers sits atop a long stalk. The leaves are feathery and fringed: it's why the species name is millefolium. A thousand leaves

The pull southwards is almost too much to bear, a fishhook embedded in the back of the mind at all times. And when they are south, north calls back to them. Pulled between two worlds, North and South, bird and human, Grey becomes sick with confusion and disorientation. It's as though their body is no longer their own.

About GreyGrey was trapped, once. Isolated in space and in mind, they took to flights of fantasy to cope. They'd get lost in the forest on purpose, learning the calls of all the birds, the seeds of all the plants, and the tracks of all the mammals. They never got the chance in life to find themself, but that's why ghosts come back to the places they haunt: unfinished business

Relationships + DepictionsGrey was transformed by Limn. She's the closest person to Grey, and even then, they hardly know her. They don't know anything else, so this intermittent companionship suits them just fine. They have a lot to learn about ghost-hoodI'm still figuring Grey out, so please only depict him as an esk. He's generally out-of-his-element, and doesn't understand much about being an esk. He doesn't know about the conservatory, and doesn't know how to fly. He makes the trip grounded. He passes through many biomes on his way down.

Boundary
The serpentine soils of the Klamath-Siskyou mountains are toxic, devoid of nutrients, and wholly unlike anything else in the region. And yet it hosts some of the highest levels of plant biodiversity and endemism in North America. Life is surprising, it tosses sense into the wind and runs with it. Where there's a will, there's a way, and as an esk, Grey exemplifies this. Despite not understanding, Grey makes the trek.
The second boundary, if it could be called that, is the Sierra de Manantlán, in Colima Mexico. Another biodiverse area, Grey spends the winters down there, parroting the flight of the swift.

rolling hills dominate the frame. tall grasses and flowers are in the foreground. farmland rests in the background.

Nature FeatureSerpentinite builds the soils of Grey's home. The soil both sustains and punishes the endemics of the region, creating a system that the plants are both wholly reliant on, but one that only exists due to the crushing toxicity present in the earth.Grey's home life was the same.
